Sam Porter, mural artist at Mural Minded https://muralminded.squarespace.com/ got in touch with High Reaching Solutions as he had an awkward project to do in Bridlington, and wanted to do it safely and efficiently.
His project was to paint a large mural on an end-of-terrace wall. However, he didn’t want to use scaffolding as this would get in the way of his painting and he wouldn’t be able to get an overall view of the scale during the process. He needed an access platform that once set up could reach up and across the whole wall!
This is where it gets awkward. The ground, mainly grassed area surrounded by footpaths, was sloping and occupied with a concrete and wooden bench which couldn’t be moved. The path around the grassed area also contained obstructions, such as trees, street signage, a lamp-post and telecoms cabinets, which also couldn’t be moved.
Enter Sophie, High Reaching Solutions Platform Basket 18.90 Pro tracked spider cherrypicker. After climbing the kerb onto the grassed area and onto ground protection boards, and then putting her adjustable tracks in the narrow setting enabled her to be negotiated into her working position relatively easily. That’s a bit of an understatement! To reach her set-up position one of her tracks HAD to go UNDER the wooden seat of the bench and next to the concrete upright of the bench (see photo). Her ‘legs’ were then lowered to just above the height of the telecoms cabinets so that she could be manoeuvred to a position to allow her ‘legs’ to be lowered safely and unobstructed (again see photos). It did take a little bit of time, but once in position it was just a matter of pressurising her legs to allow her booms to be functional. In this instance Sophie’s automatic levelling could not be used due to the closeness of her track to the bench. Any attempt to pressurise her ‘legs’ would automatically raise her higher and thereby raise her tracks off the ground, which, in turn would make her tracks come into contact with and damage the bench. The solution here was to remove the Pin which secured Sophie’s track in the narrow position, so that when her ‘legs’ were pressurised and her chassis started to rise, her track would ‘float’ and remain on the ground and under the bench.
With the combination of her articulated booms, fly-jib and rotating basket, Sophie was able to get Sam to where he needed to be safely and quickly, saving him a lot of time compared to using ladders or scaffolding and a lot easier and safer. I hope you like the photos.
